Our Technology

EvoBiotech exploits plant extracellular vesicles as a technology platform to evolve therapies and create innovative medical solutions.

Tech platform

Extracellular vesicles are bioactive nanoparticles released by all kinds of cells. They are composed of several molecules, including lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Extracellular vesicles act as messengers between cells, transferring bioactive molecules from donor cells to recipient cells and modulating cell behavior.

Extracellular vesicles derived from plants represent a new emerging technology with several advantages. They can be manufactured using a scalable extractive method that produces concentrated preparations of extracellular vesicles. Moreover, plant extracellular vesicles can be easily administered using almost all routes (enteral, parenteral, and intranasal).

Pipeline

Plant extracellular vesicles show extraordinary features which make them attractive as an innovative solution for human therapy. We are developing new therapeutic solutions by exploiting different properties of extracellular vesicles, mainly focused on two therapeutic areas: wound care and drug delivery.

Thanks to our extensive experience in the field of regenerative medicine, we discovered the therapeutical properties of plant extracellular vesicles, making them a perfect adjuvant for wound care medications. This technology allows us to create a new generation of advanced therapies for wound care. EvoBiotech’s solution improves the outcome for patients and meets the need of healthcare professionals

Plant extracellular vesicles can improve numerous features essential for wound care advanced products, including:

Efficacy

Due to their regenerative properties, extracellular vesicles significantly improve the healing efficacy of the advanced dressings and medications currently used in clinical practice.

Biocompatibility

Plant extracellular vesicles are extracted from edible plants. Their natural origin makes them highly biocompatible with our skin.

Accessibility

Compared to other innovative therapies for wound care, such as tissue-engineered products, advanced dressings containing plant extracellular vesicles vesicles are extremely cost-effective and easy to handle for patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals, at home or on an outpatient basis.

As the first product in the pipeline, we are developing a hydrogel-based dressing to deliver plant extracellular vesicles on the site of lesion.

Our technology platform allows the development of a product pipeline for wound care with different formulations. The combination of plant extracellular vesicles with existing medications increases their regenerative effect for several clinical applications. The use of plant extracellular vesicles with different matrices allows the treatment of different types of wounds (exuding and not-exuding), whereas the formulation as eye drops improves the treatment of eye diseases. Moreover, the addiction of plant extracellular vesicles to sutures and ointmen improves their efficacy and promotes surgical wound and dermatitis healing.

Plant extracellular vesicles can improve numerous features essential for wound care advanced products, including:

Resistance to degradation

Due to their structural integrity, extracellular vesicles protect their content from degradation.

Cellular uptake

The high biocompatibility of plant extracellular vesicles allows efficient delivery of their cargo to recipient cells without causing cell damage and inflammatory reactions.

Absorption

Having a natural source, plant extracellular vesicles are highly assimilable by human organisms, facilitating the absorption of the molecules they carry.

Biodistribution

Extracellular vesicles exploit a natural ability to reach the recipient cells. Moreover, their ability to cross human barriers (e.g., Blood-Brain Barrier) makes them the ideal delivery system.

Storage

The high resistance of plant extracellular vesicles allows their use as a thermostable and lyophilizable carrier.

Route of administration

Thanks to their high resistance, plant extracellular vesicles can be administered by almost all routes, including enteral, parenteral, and intranasal routes.

Several features of plant extracellular vesicles make them an attractive alternative to the delivery systems currently used.

Thanks to our expertise in loading methods of extracellular vesicles, we can combine every type of molecule with plant extracellular vesicles to improve its effectiveness. Moreover, our innovative proprietary method to engineer extracellular vesicles allows dynamic loading of less compatible molecules without reducing the extracellular vesicle’s structural integrity.

As the first product in the pipeline, we are developing a delivery system for mRNA-based vaccines orally administered and storable at room temperature. Our solution will overcome all problems connected with the cold-supply chain and the medically-assisted administration. Moreover, it will provide easier access and a more comfortable vaccination experience for patients.
